How to Choose a Comforter Size

It’s considered challenging to find the perfect size of comforter. Simple steps like measuring the mattress, bed frame height, drape length, or knowing your bedspread size can make it easier for you.

1. Measure the Mattress Size and Thickness

Comforter sizes vary from brand to brand. To ensure you get the right size, you need to do a good amount of research.

First, measure the size of your mattress. Luckily the size of the mattress is standard. However, the thickness may vary.

Pillow top and extra comfort layer mattresses are thicker than other mattresses. For thicker mattresses, you need extra wide comforters that cover the sides of your bed as well.

To measure your mattress, add the breadth and thickness of the mattress on each side. This step will prevent you from purchasing the wrong size of comforter.

2. Bed Frame Height

Bed frame height plays a vital role in determining the size of your comforter. If you have a high bed frame, you need extra-wide comforters to cover the sides of the mattress. On the other hand, short bed frames don’t require wide comforters.

3. Drape Length

Drape length is a matter of preference. It depends on whether you want the comforter to cover the sides of your bed frame or be short enough to not sag on the floor.

If you have a box spring or mattress foundation with a bed skirt, we’d recommend you to have around one-half of the bed skirt visible for a better look.

What is an Oversized Comforter?

During the comforter hunt, you’ll notice some comforters are identified as ‘oversized.’ A  comforter with more width but not extra length is known as an oversized comforter.

If you have a thick mattress, an oversized comforter is an ideal choice for you. For instance, a queen-size comforter is 86 to 88 inches wide, whereas an oversized mattress is 115 inches wide.

A right-sized comforter will be a cherry on the cake for your bedroom. Too long or too short comforters can make you toss and turn all night. Measure your mattress, look into your requirements, and get what’s best for you.

What is the difference between a bedspread and a comforter?

There is a size difference between the two. The significant difference between a bedspread and a comforter is that a comforter is more insulated.

In simple words, a comforter has more length and warmth.  Thick comforters are an ideal choice for winters.

What is the difference between a duvet and a comforter?

  • A comforter is the single part of the bedcover, whereas a duvet needs two parts of bedding.
  • Comforters are used with blankets and top sheets. In comparison, a duvet is used alone.
  • Comforters are easy to use as they don’t require a cover. In contrast, a duvet requires a cover.

How should a comforter fit on the bed?

A comforter should dangle symmetrically on every side of the bed. If the mattress is on a box spring and bed skirt,  it should cover the side of the mattress and the top portion of the bed skirt.

Are full and queen comforters the same size?

No. A queen comforter is larger and wider than a full comforter. A queen comforter is 86 to 88 inches wide, whereas a full comforter is 81 to 84 inches wide.

In terms of length, a queen comforter is 96 to 100 inches long. Whereas a full comforter is 86 to 88 inches long.

How to wash a comforter?

You should wash your comforter at least 2 or 3 times a year.

You can wash a comforter in 5 steps:

  • Read the label carefully on your comforter.
  • Remove the stains, if any.
  • Use a washing machine.
  • Choose the suitable detergent and washing settings.
  • Let your comforter dry.
