My Career Took Off When I Started Sleeping Better
By Alissa Stephens
I never made the connection between my sleep and work performance, until I was up for a promotion. Here’s what happened:
I was in the running with two other people for a marketing director role, and I wanted it badly. I was at the office early, stayed late, and volunteered to help on other projects. I expected to feel tired, but I was beyond exhausted.
I’d wake up every morning feeling super-groggy and irritable because I didn’t sleep well. I had to guzzle two cups of coffee just to make it through my morning commute. Then I’d spend the first half of my workday trying not to blow up on my co-workers.
Something had to change. It’d been months since I had a good night’s sleep, and I started to wonder if my old, spring coil mattress was to blame. I bought it when I started as an assistant 10 years ago. It was definitely time for an upgrade, especially with this promotion on the line.
After doing quite a bit of Googling about mattresses, I came across DreamCloud. The online reviews were very positive, and I liked that I had 365 days to try it out. I would still get a refund, if I changed my mind after sleeping on it for an entire year. Also, I honestly couldn’t decide whether I wanted a memory foam, spring coil, or latex mattress, and the fact that DreamCloud is made with all three meant I didn’t have to choose. Perfect!
I put in my order.
When my new mattress arrived, the White Glove Service set everything up for me and removed my old mattress. The minute they left, I sprawled on top of my new DreamCloud. Amazing—it’s like the mattress was hugging every inch of my body, if that’s even possible. And the cashmere blend cover was softer than any of the fitted sheets I owned, so I decided to make my bed without them (new trend?). I happily climbed into bed late that night and quickly drifted off to sleep.
The next morning, I couldn’t believe I woke up before my alarm went off. That hasn’t happened in forever. And I actually felt rested and ready for the work day. I even had enough time to sit down, drink my coffee, and eat breakfast at home, instead of in the car. I could get used to this, I thought.
After a week of getting ridiculously good sleep on my DreamCloud, I was feeling more focused, energetic, and confident at work. My boss even complimented my ability to stay cool under pressure when we were having issues with a client.
Soon after that happened, I started prioritizing my sleep even more; I even downloaded an app to recite daily affirmations and set positive intentions for the day.
About a month later, I had my quarterly review with my boss. She said she was impressed with my leadership skills and planned to recommend me for the marketing director role. I was so happy I almost jumped out of the chair!
I never would’ve thought that getting better sleep would have such a positive ripple effect in my life. I have a new job, a new attitude, and it all started with my DreamCloud mattress. I’m not saying that being well-rested will fix everything, but it’s definitely a start.
